Cross River Pharmacy in the News

A friend of ours, Stewart Feldman of Cross River Pharmacy in Cross River, was recently featured in the local news.  The discussion was the dire situation large operations such as pharmacy benefit managers, chain drug stores, and manufacturers are putting small pharmacies in.

Independent Drug Stores Rock!

Consumer Reports has surveyed 43,700 readers about their drug stores and the results are not surprising (to us at least!).

Independent drug stores rated highest in customer satisfaction:  94% of those shopping at one were “highly satisfied”.  They also reported fewer errors, problems, mix-ups while more services were available and used at independent stores.

Eww – Dust Mites in the Bedroom!

I’ve recently had many people come in and detail allergy symptoms to us:  runny nose, cough, post nasal drip, sneezing, etc.  Not uncommon nor surprising for this time of the year.  These patients include at the end, “it only happens at night.”  Interesting.

We were taught that environmental factors affect allergies.  Outside stuff like pollen or mold, and indoor stuff like dust or animal dander.  The worst, most disgusting offender? Dust mites (pictured above).

Arizona Toys With Tax For Medicaid Smokers

It seems the Arizona governor is introducing a fee to charge smokers who receive Medicare or Medicaid.  In Arizona, 46% of Medicaid recipients smoke daily.  This bill is referred to a “fat tax” as it will target Medicaid recipients who are overweight as well.

PPI’s may deplete magnesium

About a dozen or more reports have linked long-term use of proton pump inhibitors to a low level of magnesium in the blood.

Examples of proton pump inhibitors are Nexium, Prilosec, Aciphex, Prevacid, and Dexilant.  The effect is considered a “class effect,” meaning all drugs in the family would have the same effect.

A word on potassium iodide…

What is Potassium iodide and how is it available?

Potassium iodide is a salt form of iodine and can be used for many reasons:

  • supplementation (at low doses)
  • as an expectorant (loosens chest congestion)
  • before a thyroid procedure
  • and to protect against thyroid cancer if exposed to radioactive isotopes of iodine
